Carter Hulsey

Carter Hulsey and his band are working on a new EP, and they’re taking this one old school — releasing it on vinyl. And some of it will go on
tapes. It’s an attempt to combat some of the “have-to-have-it-right-now” factor that comes with being a musician when the internet is around.
Carter explained his position in a phone interview. “It [the internet] makes things less important and it takes out some of the passion. I used to scour through racks of CDs and really enjoyed getting all of the details about it — who wrote the songs, who produced it.”

But don’t mistake his meaning — the web is great because it “provides a tool for anyone to hear anyone’s music, and to be updated in a split second.” He’s just trying to “make it more personal” and have a chance to do some fun “weird things” while he’s doing his thing.

And his thing is playing and writing songs. He started playing in bands in the 6th grade after he found a guitar, a 77 Guild, in a closet in his house. “Apparently my mother had given it to my father as a wedding gift,” he explained. But his father never played it much, and though his older brother played music for a while, he’s the only musician in the family. Those first bands were “your typical middle school punk rock bands,” that played Blink 182 and Alkaline Trio covers. Since then, however, his influences have grown — Iron & Wine, Tom Petty and Willie Nelson are on his list of bands that he would love to play with.

For now, however, he and bandmates Thom Hoglen (Bass), Tof Hoglen (Keyboards) and Isaac Duncan (Guitar & Mandolin) are recording that EP in Springfield, Missouri and thinking up ways to make music they can feel good about.

"Before We Go Down" Lyrics

The water fell from the sky
It rained all day and all night
And the rivers flooded our whole town
So I swam to your house so we could float around

And I said, before we go down
I have to tell you that I love you
Before we go down
I hope you know that I care
'Cause I kept all these words
Bottled up so tight
But tonight's the night I'll tell ya
You're the love of my life

Our plane came tumbling from the sky
We fell so fast, we were up so high
And you didn't even make a sound
But I held your hand, 'til we hit the ground

"Black and Blue" Lyrics

I'll love you til we're black and we're blue
There's no words I could say to make me change
My minds made up, my thoughts stay the same
Baby, I love you
We'll make it through

The hole in my head is from the fire in your tongue
Our fights with the sink, our fights in the sun
The rinse in my hands, the bills on these strings
But I'll make it work, cause these are our dreams

I'll love you til we're black and we're blue
There's no words I could say to make me change
My minds made up, my thoughts stay the same
Baby, I love you
We'll make it through

I lie awake alone in my bed
Needles can't fix this hole in my chest
And you're in some town a thousand miles away
You're singing your dreams
Now you're singing my name

I'll love you til we're black and we're blue
There's no words I could say to make me change
My minds made up, my thoughts stay the same
Baby, I love you
We'll make it through

I'll love you til we're black and we're blue
There's no words I could say to make me change
My minds made up, my thoughts stay the same
Baby, I love you
We'll make it through

"Like a Bear" Lyrics

It's like a bear that woke up way before spring.
Surprised how winter steals everything.
Or a captain that never made it to sea.
With his anchor in his hand and water to his knees.
He's got his head in his hands and sand in his teeth.

So raise your glass for the broken hearted.
The liar calls to the thief.
Pass the bread the bold man said.
As we ate with the king.

It's like a soldier stuck in some terrible war.
Who never really knew what he was fighting for.
Or if he'll make it home to tell the tales.
With guns, and bombs, and bullets, and shells.
Or the bodies that fall by the grace of hell.
So raise your glass for the broken hearted.
The liar calls to the thief.
Pass the bread the bold man said.
As we ate with the king.

So if you've got a shovel, then I've got a hole.
That looks more like a grave, as I lose control.
We will fall so fast, from the skies.
We're sinners and saints, you and I.
Sinners and saints, you and I.
