Author Series: Gary Soto


Gary Soto wasn’t much of a student when he first began school, yet he had a passion for literature that later developed into a talent for writing and a successful career in academia. Soto is a very prolific author with 11 collections of poems and numerous works of acclaimed fiction.

The California author has received many awards, including the Literature Award from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, the Author-Illustrator Civil Rights Award from the National Education Association, and the PEN Center West Book Award for Petty Crimes in 1999.

Soto was born on April 12, 1952 and was raised in Fresno, California. Much of his writing focuses on Chicano life, “as a writer, my duty is not to make people perfect, particularly Mexican Americans. I’m not a cheerleader. I’m one who provides portraits of people in the rush of life.”
