Shelby: What do you think when you hear the word ‘bossy’? And do you ever hear it to describe a guy? Well, the b-word has sparked a big debate. And as Maggie Rulli reports, there is a push to stop using the word.
Maggie: The girls on this elite soccer team in Texas can think of many ways to describe themselves.
Katie Haidu: I am very passionate.
Maggie: And they don’t include the word ‘bossy’.
Katie: No, I would not take it as a compliment.
Maggie: The Sting soccer team organization prizes girls for their assertiveness.
Brent Coralli: We want our young ladies to have the leadership to be able to speak up.
Maggie: But that same confidence can get them labeled with a word that is often only used to describe girls.
Julie James: Bossy has a really negative connotation on it. When someone’s kind of ordering you, I guess, around, and you feel it’s a little bit too much.
Ban Bossy Campaign: Pushy, pushy, stubborn, stubborn, bossy, bossy, bossy, bossy.
Maggie: The Ban Bossy campaign calls for an end to the word. Launched by Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, the campaign features stars like Jennifer Garner, Beyoncé and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Ban Bossy Campaign: Be brave. Be you. Ban bossy!
Maggie: Over a matter of months, the campaign has gone viral. But the movement to ban bossy has stirred up controversy.
Juanita Wallace: It’s not an offensive word. I like to think that I’m in charge.
Maggie: Juanita Wallace, the president for the Dallas branch of the NAACP, an African-American civil rights organization, says she finds it empowering to be called bossy, and she doesn’t want to see it go.
Wallace: To ban a word is to decrease your vocabulary.
Maggie: But these girls say, for them, the message behind Ban Bossy is a positive one.
Julie: It’s cool to see someone kind of stepping up for women and just showing that we can be assertive like men can, we can be leaders, but we don’t always have to be viewed in that negative way.
Maggie: Maggie Rulli, Channel One News.
