image: Barry's Boot Camp For those of you who don’t know I LOVE working out. It’s my passion.  Reading about different workouts excites me just as much as opening up Christmas presents (yes I’m strange). So when I read there was a class that called itself  “the toughest workout in the world” I knew I had to try it!  I went into Barry’s Boot Camp with high expectations.  I had to book the class a week in advance because the current week was all sold out.  I thought – good sign.

I was a little nervous when I got to the gym because everyone there looked REALLY fit.  The work out room itself is pretty big.  One side is lined with all treadmills and the rest of the room ie the “floor” has old school step aerobics steps .  Everyone is told to grab a medium set of weights. For women it’s either 8 or 10 pounds and men can choose between 15, 20 and 25 pound dumbbells.  We also had three choices of bands.

Half the class started on the treadmills and half the class was on the floor.  I was a little confused as to what to do but I guess they assume most people are regulars because there was no “is this your first time – here’s how it works” explanation.  The entire class is spent switching from the floor to the treadmill every 5 minutes.  On the floor we started off doing lunges while holding our dumbbells.  The treadmill people started off with a jog and then they had to increase the speed every 30 seconds.  After 5 minutes we switched.  I went to the treadmill and the treadmill people went to the floor.

The other floor sessions included using dumbbells to lift chest, shoulders and back.  We used the bands for shoulders and hamstrings.  The treadmill sessions including 5 minutes running on an incline, 5 minutes going from jog to run to sprint and 5 minutes running sideways and backwards.  We ended with some quick abs.  the entire class is about an hour.

The lighting is pretty dim which I didn’t like.  But the music was energetic – mostly top 40 (yes please!)  My instructor Harvey did a good job telling each group what to do and motivating everyone.  But he didn’t give anyone individual attention…oops how do I tell him I like being in the limelight! Just kidding..sorta.

I definitely sweated but hardest workout in the world? Definitely not. Cardiovascular wise I was not challenged.  Lifting was more difficult for me but I don’t think it would be for anyone who lifts serious weights.

Would I do it again? Maybe. I'd try a different instructor to see if they change it up.  But at 32 dollars a pop I would not make this my regular workout.  I think you could design something on your own and do it at the gym.  But if you like the energy of other people motivating you and having an instructor tell you what to do, then I do think it’s a satisfactory workout.  Or even if you’re bored with your regular routine, it’s something fun to change it up.  And that’s what I think of "the toughest workout in the world."
