image: The Time Person of the Year Who will be the 2012 TIME Person of the year?

Every year TIME Magazine recognizes a 'Person of the Year' on their cover to signify where the world is and where it’s going. In the past, there have been controversial leaders like Adolf Hitler, activists like Martin Luther King Jr. and representations of specific people that have influence the world like ‘The Protester’ as recognized in 2011.

A TIME Person of the Year is “the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year,” said TIME’s Executive Editor Radhika Jones. TIME recognizes all news isn’t good news and although the subject may be affecting our world in a negative way they are still a force of history.

Many presidents have been recognized; Former President Ronald Regan twice, Former President George Bush twice, and current President Barack Obama in 2008 just to name a few. Sometimes, inanimate objects are also including in the running; ‘The Computer’ was the TIME Person of the Year in 1982.

This year’s person will be announced on the TODAY Show on December 19. Candidates include skydiver Felix Baumgartner, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Apple CEO Tim Cook, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, The Mars Rover, Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps, YouTube sensation Psy, Comedian Jon Stewart among many others. Even though TIME editors get the final say, these are my 2012 favorites:

Michael Bloomberg, New York City Mayor. Bloomberg commandeered an aggressive health movement eliminating trans fats in restaurants, prohibiting indoor smoking, and banning sodas and sugary drinks lager than 16 oz. Bloomberg was also praised for his response to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Hilary Clinton, Secretary of State. Just four years ago Clinton’s image was tarnished after her failed attempt as the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Now Clinton is gaining attention for her increasing approval rating. Clinton has traveled around the globe more than any other Secretary of State in U.S. history, traveling to 112 countries.

Gabrielle Douglas, Two-time Olympic Gold medalist. Douglas became the first African-American gymnast to win the all-around Olympic title in gymnastics. She also is the first U.S. gymnast to win both all-around and team golds in a single Olympic Game. Even though she gained much media attention over her hairstyle, the 16-year-old held her hair high becoming a teen sensation of the year.

Michael Phelps, Olympic Swimmer. Phelps became the greatest Olympian of all time this summer at the London 2012 Olympics. In 2012, Phelps won four golds and two silver meals at his third straight Olympics in a row. He also retired from the sport this year at 27-years-old as the most decorated Olympian ever collecting 22 medals including 18 gold.

Jay-Z, rapper. The rapper, also known by his birth name Shawn Carter, is one of the most successful hip-hop artists of all time. He is worth about $500 million according to Forbes, coming in at the number two on the ‘Top-5 Richest Rappers’ list. In 2012, he welcomed his first child Blue Ivy Carter, sold out eight shows at the new Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, and helped Obama to his second presidential term with his song "I got 99 problems, but Mitt ain't one”.

Barack Obama, Current U.S. President. After many critics disapproved his handling of the economy during his first term, Obama still came back to win this year’s presidential election. In 2012, Obama approved same-sex marriage, visited Myanmar, announced that his administration would stop deporting young undocumented immigrants, created a new federal student loan repayment system, and got the Supreme Court’s approval for the Affordable Care Act.

Who do you want to see as the 2012 TIME Person of the Year?

image: Behind the Scenes: The Newsroom You've seen the shows but what really goes on behind the scenes in the newsroom?

One thing that surprised me was how health conscious the entire staff is here. All the producers, anchors, and reporters love to exercise on a daily basis and eat a healthy lifestyle - especially Maggie Rulli! Every day she brings in a new concoction of healthy homemade snacks. Being a vegetarian myself, it was nice to see the healthy-food cognizant staff.

Another thing that I really like about the newsroom was the atmosphere. There is a fresh vibe that you can feel working in the newsroom, a collective group of people doing what they love. As an intern, one of the challenging things is that I can’t go on any of the interesting and exciting trips with the rest of the staff. Since I’ve been here in August the reporters have gone to Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, Mexico and just this weekend, Myanmar. Plus Jessica and one of the producers were in Israel over the summer for a series that’s going to start next week.

They’re constantly searching for new story ideas and teens that are influencing the world. I admit I’m a bit jealous that I don’t get to go on these exhibitions but my dream would be the ability to travel the world and report on stories at the same time.

Some food for thought: “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

image: Helllloooo! Hello Channel One Viewers! My name is Alexis Morgan. You might've seen me a few times on the show. I'm currently an intern for the Channel One Network at the CBS headquarters in New York City.

When I was told I'd be interning for the network, I didn’t know anything about Channel One News. I didn’t have the program at my middle/high school but now that I see how it’s affecting youth, I wish I had!

I also soon found out that my favorite reporter, Lisa Ling, who inspired my own journalistic dreams, began her own career at the network. Channel One is all about news relevant to the young generation, something which I think is so important. When I was in school, I didn’t know about world news topics or presidential platforms, that’s why I’m so happy to have been placed with Channel One for my internship.

We’re educating youth about the world they live in so they can be contributing members of society as informed adult. I first became interested in journalism as a sports reporter. I liked providing information to the audience which ultimately led me to a broader interest in news. I picked up a journalism major at my undergraduate school and am now pursing a masters degree in journalism. I hope this experience at Channel One will help me understand the way news influences young generations -- and ultimately the world.

Thanks for watching!
