Common Applications for College

Now that you’ve started your college search, you may be feeling overwhelmed by all of the admission applications, essays, letters of recommendation, scholarships and graduation planning. Yet, don’t fret, there are common applications to help you apply to multiple schools at once.

There are a few types of “common apps” that allow you to apply to many different types of schools across the country. Whether you want to apply to a variety of schools across the U.S. or a group of schools in one state, these applications streamline the process for prospective students like you.

The Common Application

In 1975 when the Common Application began, 15 schools participated in the program. There are now — in the 2013-2014 school year — 488 schools in the U.S., as well as in France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, and Switzerland, that accept the Common Application.

The Universal Application

Apply to 44 different colleges and universities like Duke, Harvard and Tulane University using this online application. The site offers a simple breakdown for each college’s admission requirements.

Common Black College Application

Apply to any of the 36 historically black colleges and universities in the U.S. for only $35.

University of California — Common Application

Apply to any combination of the 9 UC schools — Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, L.A., Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barabara or Santa Cruz — with a single application.

Texas Colleges & Universities — Common Application

Use this application to seek admission to any public university and participating community and private colleges in the Lone Star State.

SUNY — State University of New York

The nation’s largest and most comprehensive state university system, SUNY offers prospective students a full roster of community colleges in New York state with an easy application process and numerous programs and locations.
