PHOENIX (AP) — Willie Bloomquist lined his third hit for a run-scoring single in the 10th inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks avoided a three-game sweep with a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.
Eric Chavez got the final rally started by blooping a single off Luis Perez (0-1) and pinch-runner Adam Eaton moved to third on A.J. Pollock’s single off Jeremy Jeffress. Bloomquist then singled through Toronto’s drawn-in infield to cap the Diamondbacks’ franchise record-tying 21st extra-inning inning game.
Arizona recovered after a shaky first inning by Randall Delgado, tying the game while its pitchers face the minimum over the next eight innings. Will Harris (3-0) worked around a baserunner in the 10th inning to set up Bloomquist’s fourth career game-winning hit.
Rajai Davis homered for the second straight game for Toronto.
Toronto, which had won three in a row on the road, beat Arizona 10-4 Tuesday night by jumping on Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley for five runs in 1 2-3 innings.
The Blue Jays did the same thing against Delgado, going up 3-0 in the first on Edwin Encarnacion’s run-scoring double and Davis’ fourth homer.
But Delgado, coming off two solid outings, found a groove after the initial flurry and retired 13 straight batters before Jose Reyes beat out an infield single to open the sixth.
Delgado erased Reyes with a double play and was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning after allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle had a similar outing.
Matt Davidson ended Buehrle’s scoreless streak at 14 innings with an RBI double in the second inning and Miguel Montero followed with another double to cut Toronto’s lead to 3-2.
The left-hander shook off the shaky inning, working around a pair of baserunners in the third inning before retiring 10 of the next 11 batters.
Buehrle was lifted after a walk and a single in the seventh inning, and pinch hitter Eric Chavez followed with a sacrifice fly off Sergio Santos that tied the game at 3-all.
Buehrle allowed three runs — two earned — on five hits in 6 1-3 innings.
