Eye of the Hurricane

A hurricane, or a tropical cyclone, is a storm that forms over a body of warm water and escalates from a tropical disturbance, to a tropical depression, to a tropical storm, until finally reaching hurricane status with winds of at least 74 mph.

These violent storms tend to develop more frequently in the warm spring and summer months, one reason there is a hurricane ‘season,’ stretching from May to November over the waters known as the tropics which include the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the eastern North Pacific Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean.

When a hurricane happens, people in it’s path are often left without basics needs such as food, shelter and clean water. Test your hurricane IQ with the quiz below and follow these guidelines for helping those caught in the path of a storm.

Money Matters

  • Relief organizations can use cash to purchase exactly what is needed — such as tents, food, blankets and medication.

Confirm the Need

  • Do not make assumptions. You can confirm what is needed by checking with an on-site relief organization.

Disaster Relief Positions Are Limited

  • If you do no have prior disaster relief experience you will generally not be selected to aid in the relief effort. You have a greater chance of being selected if you are fluent in the language of the disaster area or have expertise in a technical field such as medicine.
