Haiti is a Caribbean country on the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. The first independent nation in Latin America, it was founded after a slave rebellion in 1804. It’s violent inception seems to have carried on throughout it’s political history — even in stable times it has a reputation for corruption in government and as a dangerous place. Haiti’s people are the poorest in the Americas, living on less than $2 per person per day.
