How the Dow Jones industrial average did on Monday

The Dow Jones industrial average edged higher on Monday and closed at a record high for the 35th time this year. Trading was quiet, marking one of the lowest volume days of the year. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index also crept higher and closed within a fraction of its record.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 21.32 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 15,783.10.

The S&P 500 index climbed 1.28 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,771.89

The Nasdaq composite gained 0.56 points, or 0.01 percent, to 3,919.79.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 2,678.96 points, or 20.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 345.70 points, or 24.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 900.28 points, or 29.8 percent.
