How the Dow Jones industrial average did Wednesday

Stocks fell for fifth straight day. Worries about Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, and the growing possibility of a government shutdown weighed on investors’ minds.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 61.33 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 15,273.26.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 4.65 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,692.77.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 7.16 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,761.10.

For the week so far:

The Dow is down 177.83 points, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 17.14 points, or 1 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 13.63 points, or 0.4 percent

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 2,169.12 points, or 16.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 266.58 points, or 18.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 741.59 points, or 24.6 percent.
