How the S&P 500 index fared Thursday

A batch of negative company news gave investors something to fret about Thursday. A day after eking out its first record high of 2014, the stock market lost ground Thursday as electronics retailer Best Buy, Citigroup, and railroad CSX had disappointing earnings news.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 64.93 points, or 0.4 percent, to 16,417.01.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 2.49 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,845.89.

The Nasdaq composite rose 3.80 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,218.69.

For the week:

The Dow is down 20.04 points, or 0.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 3.52 points, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 44.02 points, or 1.1 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 159.65 points, or 1 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 2.49 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 42.10 points, or 1 percent.
