Indiana State beats No. 21 Notre Dame 83-70

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Justin Gant scored 17 points, Manny Arop had 13 and Indiana State beat No. 21 Notre Dame 83-70 on Sunday.

It was the first home November loss for Notre Dame under 14th-year coach Mike Brey, whose teams had been 48-0 in November entering Sunday.

Khristian Smith added 15 points for the Sycamores (2-1).

The Sycamores led 40-30 at halftime, but Notre Dame took a 45-44 lead with 15:07 remaining on Austin Burgett’s three-point play. Indiana State responded with an 18-3 run to take control of the game.

Eric Atkins led the Irish with 18 points. Jerian Grant had 17 and Pat Connaughton finished with 16.

Gant helped close out the Irish with 1:59 remaining. With the shot clock winding down and the Sycamores holding a 10-point lead, Gant drained a 3-pointer to send a good number of Notre Dame fans to the doors.

The Sycamores used a 12-0 run midway through the first half to open a 19-9 lead. Smith scored eight points during the spurt, starting the run with a follow dunk and adding a 3-pointer.

Indiana State, which knocked off a pair of Top 25 teams last year, limited the Irish to 36 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers. The Sycamores shot 48 percent from the field, including 11 of 20 from the 3-point line.

Balance helped carry the Sycamores, with Jake Odum and Devonte Brown each scoring 10 points. Beyond Notre Dame’s big three of Atkins, Grant and Connaughton, no other Irish player scored more than six.
