Ladies First: The 2013 Celebrity 100

Every year, Forbes, the business magazine, publishes the Celebrity 100, a list of the world’s most powerful stars. The list ranks celebrities based on a variety of factors, including earnings, press mentions, TV appearances, radio popularity and social-media presence.

The 2013 edition of the Celebrity 100 was released last week.

The top of this year’s list, much like the top of last year’s list, was dominated by female celebs. Women secured four of the first five and six of the first 10 spots–lending a whole new meaning to the phrase “girl power.”

Check out this year’s wonder women below!

1.  Oprah Winfrey

Winfrey wins again! Despite losing more than half her earnings since her show went off the air last year, the former queen of TV talk is back, reigning as the most powerful celebrity on the list for the fifth time. Forbes attributes the billionaire’s position in the top spot to her overall wealth and strong fame scores.

2.  Lady Gaga

Fans are simply gaga for Gaga. Like those of Winfrey, Gaga’s 2013 earnings suffered a sizable hit (she was unable to complete her Born This Way Ball Tour due to a serious hip injury). Fortunately for Mother Monster, however, her enormous social media presence–38 million Twitter followers and 58 million Facebook fans–propelled her to the No. 2 spot on this year’s list.

4.  Beyoncé Knowles-Carter

Mama Knowles best! After a year-long hiatus following the birth of Blue Ivy, new mother Beyoncé is back in action on her Mrs. Carter World Tour. Finishing 28 spots ahead of hubby Jay-Z at No. 4, Beyoncé has shown “who run(s) the world–girls!”

5.  Madonna

The highest earner on the list ($125 million as of June 2013), everyone’s favorite Material Girl snagged the final position in this year’s Celebrity 100 top 5.

It should come as no surprise that America’s sweetheart landed a spot in the Celebrity 100′s top 10 this year. Upon her acceptance of the Artist of the Year trophy at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards last month–one of eight that the big winner of the evening carried home with her–Swift professed to millions of fans, “You are the longest and best relationship I’ve had.”

10.  Ellen DeGeneres

In the top 10 for social media presence, top 20 for marketability and top 30 for money, well-rounded talk show host and executive producer Ellen DeGeneres claimed the No. 10 spot on the 2013 Celebrity 100.

Thirty-four prominent celebrities–including Brad Pitt, Britney Spears and Johnny Depp–were knocked off the list this year to make room for newcomers like actor Channing Tatum, actress Emma Stone and supermodel Miranda Kerr.

Also debuting on the list this year are two “Hunger Games” celebrities: writer Suzanne Collins and actress Jennifer Lawrence.
