Early bicycle helmets were heavy, unattractive and hot. With NASA's help, the inventor of Giro bike helmets used technology for fighter plane wings to develop a faster, lightweight yet safe helmet. NASA-developed aircraft passenger seats also helped create the padding now used in football helmets, chest protectors and shin guards.
