"Are you ready to rock?!"This iconic phrase would mean nothing to the average music fan prior to the late 1940's. Hard to believe? It's true -- rock and roll, a music genre that began in the late 40's and early 50's is actually a young genre. In fact, it began as a combination of blues, country and gospel in the U.S.
Since then, the genre has evolved to encompass many different types of rock music ranging from folk rock, punk, heavy metal, grunge, indie rock, along with many more sub-genres. Yet, who was the first rock star, you ask?
That's a tough question. Historians and music experts have several musicians in mind, but few can agree who was the first because different musicians released the first rock and roll album, or first topped the charts -- common ways to pinpoint the original pioneer. However, pop culture suggests musicians like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis were innovators of the industry.
