Olaudah Equiano wrote his autobiography, which was one of the first narratives to detail the experience of slavery from being purchased in Africa to eventually achieving freedom. Though Equiano traveled throughout his story, he spent time in Virginia and later Philadelphia.
In his twenties, he was purchased by a merchant who later let him earn his freedom. Once he was emancipated, he went to London to become a part of the abolition movement.
