Rachael Flatt won her second consecutive silver medal at the U.S. Championships and earned a spot on her first world championship team. Twenty days too young for the 2008 Worlds, Flatt instead won the 2008 Junior World Championships. In Los Angeles, Rachael performed admirably, placing seventh in the short program and fifth overall.

Since Flatt and Alissa Czisny, who was eleventh, did not achieve combined placements less than or equal to 13 to qualify 3 spots for the U.S. team in Vancouver (6th and 7th, 5th and 8th, etc.), for the first time since 1994 only two American ladies will compete in the Olympics. A standout, straight-A high school senior, Flatt spent the summer of 2009 touring elite colleges. beginning her college applications and working on her essays. During the fall 2009 semester at Cheyenne Mountain high school, Rachael took four AP courses: English, French, Physics and Calculus, with English beginning at 6:45am. Rachel is interested in pursuing the sciences - possibly biomechanical engineering, medical school and orthopedics.

Flatt began skating when she was four years old when her dad took her to the mall to shop for a birthday gift for her grandfather and they came home with skating lessons instead. By 12, she was the U.S. champion in the novice ladies division and the junior runner-up a year later in 2006. She won the 2008 Junior Worlds.

Following the 2009 Nationals, Dorothy Hamill became Flatt's mentor. Flatt says she was honored and excited to begin working with Hamill and thought "Holy cow! It is an honor just to know an Olympic champion."

The Flatt family is steeped in the sciences; Rachael's father is a biochemical engineer and her mother is a molecular biologist. Her grandfather, Horace Flatt, was a national fencing champion. Rachel has two old English Sheepdogs, Lucy and Ethel, named after the I Love Lucy characters.
