Malina Moye

Many things about guitar-wielding songstress Malina Moye are eclectic. From her fashion choices on the red carpet, to her music, Moye prefers to mix things up. Growing up in the Ohio music scene with a family of musicians and a collection of “the best musicians in the world,” at local festivals and shows, Moye took a moment to tell us about her life before her Billboard-chart-topping days as a recording artist began in 2004.

“I’ve always had a wonderful feast of artists to choose from, that’s what I wanted to project with this album,” said Moye in between having her eyebrows done and meeting with her stylist.

She remembers seeing performer “masters” like Prince in Paisley Park and her father encouraging her to pick up a guitar and learn music when she seven years old. Moye said playing the guitar really clicked for her when she was 11 and decided to flip it over to play lefty. “Playing an instrument is like having a love affair,” she explained. “You spend all this time with it just playing and listening to other people. Then something strikes a chord.”

Malina Moye moved to Los Angeles to pursue her music career, and just a few years later she was among the glitterati on red carpet events and a beam of light travelling around the world on tour playing R&B hits mixed with the funky rhythm of her guitar.

Yet, despite the glamour, she sticks to her creative core, “I love lyrics, words — it’s like breathing.” Then she added with a laugh, “Everything you say can be a song.” And, we believe her.

Lyrics for "Girlfriend"

Girlfriend I think you better talk to your boyfriend
'Cause he's been peepin' me out to talkin' about you
Saying he wants me and he don't want you (repeat)

It wouldn't be right if you didn't know the truth about your dude
He calls me up talking' bout you telling me he needs someone new
I tell him over and over again that you are my best friend
Who in the hell does he think I am I’m not that type of girl
So you better check your man

Girlfriend I think you better talk to your boyfriend
'Cause he's been peepin' me out to talkin' about you
Saying he wants me and he don't want you (repeat)

You are so blind that you can't see
That he's playing you while thinking bout me
He called my up just the other day to tell me he's coming my way
I tell over and over again that he is not a good man
Who in the hell does he think I am I'm not that kind of girl
So you better check your man

Lyrics for "K-yotic"

I am so k-yotic
You are so neurotic
We got systematic
Love, we got to make it thru

Every time I move ahead gravity gets hold of me
I'm just trying to live my life and stay to steps ahead
K-yotic my life's k-yotic

I just lost my job
Rent is short 50 dollars
The landlord is banging on the door
I want to be singing that la la la la
Now if you feel my problems turn this up
