Mat Kearney

Eugene, Oregon native Mat Kearney describes his hometown as “smart, progressive, open to art, new age and family oriented kind of town.” But his first foray into music was not typical. “My mom brought a piano home for my dad to learn on, but instead I ended up banging on it all day and the next day it was gone,” he explained in a phone interview. “I did not grow up in a musical home.” Mat’s favorite subject in school, however, was English — or anything that involved writing. It wasn’t until one of his teachers “came across a poem I had written and told me that it was really good and that I should write.” And so he did.

In college, Mat stole his roommate’s guitar and began teaching himself how to play some simple chords before starting to write his own songs. He then went to Nashville, after offers for recording deals began coming in, Kearney decided to remain in Tennessee to pursue his songwriting career. When asked about what he would tell the youth of today he explained that, “High School is fun and tough. Sometimes it’s hard to see past all of it,” he continued, “but it will be over and there is a world outside beyond high school. There is something bigger outside of the pain.”

Mat has released his album Young Love, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and toured with Owl City. When asked what his plans are for the future, he told us his “focus is to perform live more and continue to make really good records.” Well, it sounds like he’s well on his way. Check him out for yourself here, on the tracks “Hey Mama,” “Sooner or Later,” and “Count On Me.” He gives a piece of himself on every tune, building timeless tales for listeners to follow as they dance and sing along.

"Hey Mama" Lyrics

She don't know what she wants to be
With all the pictures in the magazines
Holding hands when she's mad at me
'Cause she don't wanna go; don't wanna go
I met her at Anthropologie
Her purple boots and her golden dreams
Standing there like a TN Queen
Singing don't look at me; don't look at me
Singing Oh Oh won't you help me sing this song?
Singing E E E she don't ever wanna go to sleep
Singing Hey Mama don't want no drama just a kiss before I leave (ohhhh)
Hey Lady don't say maybe you're the one that I can believe
Hey lover don't want no other,
Finger for my ring

Hey mama hey hey mama
Hey mama hey hey mama
Hey mama hey hey mama
Hey mama hey hey mama

Oh
I could see it in her Cherokee eyes
Those baby browns and her golden thighs
What are you doing for the rest of your life cause I Don't wanna go don't wanna go

Singing Oh Oh won't you help me sing this song?
Singing E E E quit your playing like a mystery
Singing Hey Mama don't want no drama just a kiss before I leave (ohhhh)
Hey lady don't say maybe you're the one that I can believe
Hey lover don't want no other,
Finger for my ring
Hey mama hey hey mama
Hey mama hey hey mama
Hey mama hey hey mama
Hey mama hey hey mama

Oh oh oh oh

We couldn't be more opposite
I'm hard to please and she's hard to get
You're Mississippi and I'm Oregon
You're she tanned and I'm porcelain
Singing Hey Mama I don't want no drama just a Kiss before I leave
Hey lady don't say maybe you’re the one I can believe
Hey lover I don't want no other
Finger for my ring

Hey mama hey hey mama
Hey mama hey hey mama
Hey mama hey hey mama
Hey mama hey hey mama
Oh oh oh oh oh
