Calendar For Preston
Hear it Now
Based in Ohio, the band Calendar For Preston knows what it means to benefit from "happy accidents." Over the last five years bandmembers Stephen Jordan (lead vocals), Joey Sexton (guitar), Tom Gutman (bass and keys) and Ryan Harris (drums) experienced what some would call lucky breaks. Yet, for bassist Gutman, that would go against one of his favorite quotes and motivation when it comes to music, "There's no such thing as good luck, it's when preparation meets opportunity," he said in an interview.
For this band, being prepared started years before they'd ever met. Gutman, who began playing piano at seven years old and taught himself to play guitar at 12, collaborated with Sexton and Jordan in a "makeshift band," and Gutman said, "It worked, so we did it again. It all happened accidentally." After playing cover songs regularly, they began writing new songs easily, "We had some music in our pockets," Gutman added confidently. Now that the band has had more experience after releasing their first album, Paint By Numbers, this year, Gutman told us how the band's creative process has evolved.
"It takes longer, but we make better stuff," he said. "Now we think about the key, progression and feeling of the songs," adding, "We are open, we collaborate, and sometimes we butt heads, but it's all good stuff. It's great to see how much more comfortable we are with each other." Currently the band plays gigs on the weekends and will be going on tour this year. As for the future, the band will "keep doing what we're doing, moving forward," which includes recording their next album, looking out for new opportunities and, of course those happy, career-making accidents. —Christa Fletcher
