Christina Perri
Hear it Now
"If there's something you're afraid of doing, that's probably what you should be doing."
When Philly-native Christina Perri decided that was true, she had already decided to do the thing that scared her most -- stop following someone else's path and do the thing she had been most afraid of since she was about fourteen -- write music.
"I had been singing most of my life at church, in choirs, and when I fell in love for the first time, I started writing songs." But because she was always "dating someone and doing what they did -- making olive oil in Europe, producing music videos, getting distracted" from what she really wanted to do -- which was writing and singing.
In 2009, however, she had a breakthrough -- literally. "I broke open. I had no job, no car, no credit cards, no dogs -- and I locked myself away in my shoebox apartment in Los Angeles and started writing. I wrote 'Jar of Hearts' in December of 2009." She posted it, and her other work, on You Tube. Six months later, "my best friend, a dancer, and who was also struggling in L.A. in a shoebox apartement, got an email from someone working on the TV show "So You Think You Can Dance."
A producer was looking for songs for the show and her friend sent her Christina's song, 'Jar of Hearts.' Then, she explained, "something cosmic and amazing happened that never happens -- everyone said yes." Three weeks later, her song, which was simple and raw because she had no time to put into the production work before the show aired, was on the show. "I would never change it now -- I can't hear it any other way."
Her fans would probably agree. Christina's honest lyrics and emotional melodies are easy to connect with and hard to get out of your head. Now, she has a EP out, a full album next month and a tour starting up right now. Listen to four of Christina's song here -- and don't miss the video for "Jar of Hearts" below.
