"Great art always rises up when change is going on," says Company of Thieves lead singer, Genevieve Schatz. The band hits the right notes and covers the issues on their debut record, Ordinary Riches.
Schatz is unafraid to acknowledge their music was inspired by political changes and concern for world issues. "This is a scary time for a lot of people, government-wise, art-wise, and especially business-wise," says Schatz, "But at the same time, there's a new, gutsy energy coming out right now."
Based in Chicago, Genevieve Schatz, Marc Walloch and Mike Ortiz also emphasize their role as a band, rather than as back up musicians for their lead vocalist. "For at least the past 10 years in mainstream music there's been this overwhelming focus on the 'front man,'" says guitarist Marc Walloch. "When we were kids we knew the names of every member. It was the bands who were important then, and we're hoping to bring that kind of feeling back."
With the band's united front and unique sound, a cross between a modern rock version of Fiona Apple and Bjork, Company of Thieves steals a place in the spotlight as fresh, whimsical and even a little edgy. Teens and adults alike will be taken by this new outfit, not only because the Thieves are reminiscent of their favorites, but because their album, Ordinary Riches, speaks to a need for quality music with thoughtful lyrics inspired by challenges we can all relate to.
