Lucy Schwartz
Hear it Now
"We always had music in our house," said singer-songwriter Lucy Schwartz in a phone interview. Yet, for this rising star, playing the piano didn't come naturally until she began composing songs. When she was six-years-old Schwartz wrote her first instrumental song and performed it for three thousand people during a National PTA Contest. By the time she was 12, Schwartz learned she could write lyrics to accompany her instrumental pieces. "My piano teacher held a recital," she remembered, "and so many kids had written songs with lyrics."
As an adult, Lucy Schwartz has said, "lyrics pop out of music," as if they blossom from the ground like flowers. Now that she is 20-years-old, she writes a garden variety of songs for movies, TV shows and her new record. Based in Los Angeles, Schwartz recorded her first album, Winter in June, when she was 16-years-old. Since then she's released her EP Help Me! Help Me! and her latest album, Life in Letters. Schwartz hopes to release her next album in spring of 2011. For now, she's eligible to win two Academy Awards for her song "Darling I Do," from the Shrek Forever After soundtrack and "Little One" from the film Mother and Child.
How did such a young women become a recording superstar? The answer is simple: talent, motivation and support from her father, David Schwartz. With a recording studio in their backyard, Lucy Schwartz and her dad (who is also a producer and also plays in her live shows) record music together. After recording songs, they shared Lucy's music with friends and family -- and had some positive responses, including an opportunity to write and record songs for films, and feature songs on TV shows like Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy. One of Lucy's biggest compliments came from Mick Jagger after she had written the end credit song for the film, The Women. Some discussed having Fergie sing the song Lucy wrote, but "Mick Jagger said, 'No, Lucy should sing it!'"
Since writing two solid albums and taking the entertainment world by song, Lucy Schwartz also played the Lillith Fair tour, continues to write and record songs, and find time for her friends and family. "It's really important to make time for the people you love," she said. Schwartz also enjoys dancing and surfing, but not at the same time...yet.
