Mat Kearney
Hear it Now
Eugene, Oregon native Mat Kearney describes his hometown as "smart, progressive, open to art, new age and family oriented kind of town." But his first foray into music was not typical. "My mom brought a piano home for my dad to learn on, but instead I ended up banging on it all day and the next day it was gone," he explained in a phone interview. "I did not grow up in a musical home." Mat's favorite subject in school, however, was English -- or anything that involved writing. It wasn't until one of his teachers "came across a poem I had written and told me that it was really good and that I should write." And so he did.
In college, Mat stole his roommate's guitar and began teaching himself how to play some simple chords before starting to write his own songs. He then went to Nashville, after offers for recording deals began coming in, Kearney decided to remain in Tennessee to pursue his songwriting career. When asked about what he would tell the youth of today he explained that, "High School is fun and tough. Sometimes it's hard to see past all of it," he continued, "but it will be over and there is a world outside beyond high school. There is something bigger outside of the pain."
Mat's album Young Love is set for release on August 2nd on the same day he will also be appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He is currently on tour with Owl City, and when asked what his plans are for the future, he told us his "focus is to perform live more and continue to make really good records." If this album is any indication -- he's well on his way. Check him out for yourself here, on the tracks "Hey Mama," "Sooner or Later," and "Count On Me." He gives a piece of himself on every tune, building timeless tales for listeners to follow as they dance and sing along. -- Jessica Rojas
