Meiko

Hear it Now

When Meiko (pronounced MEE-KOH) and her sister Kelly moved to Los Angeles from Roberta, Georgia to pursue their careers, she hadn't traveled much, but she said she wanted to see the world. This small town girl, who used to watch Channel One News in school, was ready for the big time and later found it while working as a waitress at Hotel Cafe, a restaurant and hot spot for concerts.

Meiko, a singer-songwriter who also plays guitar, moved to L.A. with her older sister who works as a clothing designer. "Being with my sister took the edge off," Meiko said about the "very scary" transition. Since then, she has adapted well to city life, gaining inspiration from other musicians like Dido and acquiring support from the owners of Hotel Cafe.

Meiko's career success has led to her national tour that began in February 2009. Meiko counts her most rewarding moments in two anecdotes. The first she shared was about the time Dido went to Hotel Cafe to hear her perform. "First you look up to someone and then they go out of their way to see you show - it's incredible."

Perhaps her most interesting tale from concerts was when a fan approached her after a show. He was a young twenty-something soldier from the army, who received her album as a gift before his tour in Iraq. "He said it helped get him through everything," said Meiko. "I felt flabbergasted. It was the ultimate thank you." She added, "To be that comfort for someone really hit home."
