Parachute
Hear it Now
There are few bands that live up to the color and vivacity of their band name. Yet, Parachute (not to be confused with Parachute Band) totally pulls it off. The fivesome's carefree music, will whisk you away to a fun pop-y (Jason Mraz-like) place, lightly floating over music genres in a landscape of rock, streams of soul and patches of R&B. Aside from the obvious fan favorite, "She Is Love," I also found myself replaying "Under Control."
The origins of this fun, yet mellow pop-rock ensemble started in Charlottesville, Virginia where they also landed a gig with Nivea. Though most bands dislike the shift in the music industry success timeline that once began with underground fan craze and ended in commercial success, Parachute totally embraced the opportunity when their song "She is Love" was used to advertise Nivea products.
In fact, they even scored a confetti-snowing concert for one million people in Times Square when the ball (and temperature) dropped in New York City for New Year's '09. "I could barely hold on to my drumsticks," laughs drummer Johnny Stubblefield. "The guys were struggling with their fingertips, but it was so worth it."
Not ready to pull the cord and download them yet? Parachute was the number one download on iTunes when they released their debut album Losing Sleep this month. I guess I'm not the only one who's into these guys.
If you've already heard of Parachute, or were one of the million New Year's Eve spectators at their show in Times Square, you may be catching them on their spring tour. They're planned to hit the East coast so far, but don't lose any sleep over these dates-- I'm sure they'll add more now that they've landed so well on their feet.
