Few bands can jam, hit the road for tours and still find the time to play a round of golf together. For Runaway City, maintaining a balanced life and creating a safe haven for their fans is a hole in one. "As a band, we want people to find refuge in our songs, even if it's just for three minutes," says drummer Chris Burrows on the band's website. "We want to be that safe haven for people, and that's what actually inspired our name. In the Old Testament, if someone committed a major crime like murder or theft, they had to flee to a safe place until they could have a fair trial. And that's what Runaway City is, an oasis from life's complications and troubles."
When we caught up with Burrows, he shared more about the band's origins, influences and penchant for golf. "We all play golf," said Burrows. "We don't get to play together that often, but it's kinda funny we all do it." Though their recording and touring keep them busy, the band tries to have a good time together, whether they are getting Tae Kwon Do lessons from lead singer Josh Edwards, or they're laughing about travel mishaps. On tour, he said, "We all just hang out. Things always go wrong and we try to find the humor in that."
The band's light-hearted nature, combined with their friendships -- Burrow and guitarist Tyler Ricketts were college roommates in Texas and lead guitarist Jace Bowman and Edwards are cousins -- forge a strong mix for this North Carolina band. "We usually write songs apart from each other," Burrow explained about writing and recording songs. "We bring them together and then mold them. We all have our own perspective and creative touch."
Influnced by bands like Switchfoot, U2 and Daughtry, Runaway City has compelling rock riffs with lyrics that will appeal to listeners of any age. Their single "Fade" is a love song, while "Scars is about the fading pain people feel after making mistakes. These universal themes are emblematic of the band's mission to connect with, and provide solace to fans, who they say, are just like them: "At the end of the day, we want people to realize that we are real people." —Christa Fletcher
