We the Kings
Hear it Now
When we spoke with Travis Clark of the powerpop band We the Kings, he was sitting at his piano with his computer on top and his guitar nearby in the living room of his new house. As he prepares for the band's next album in his "workshop," he said, "It's going really well so far, I haven't been stressed out, which is good. I'm finding good ideas from demos we recorded and I'm sorting completed songs, lyrics and chord progressions."
At 25-years-old, Clark's hard work and talent has paid off. With two popular albums, he and bandmembers, Hunter Thomsen, Drew Thomsen and Danny Duncan released their self-titled album in 2007 and Smile Kid in 2009. They hope to release their third album in spring 2010. For the holidays, the band will be in their Florida homes writing and recording new tracks. In fact, Drummer Danny Duncan is roommates with Clark and the Thomsen brothers only live "three football fields away."
"We spend so much time together on tour that if we aren't close, we get separation anxiety," joked Clark as he began to share his experience writing their second album. "Every song means something completely different," he said of Smile Kid. "We put life and passion in our music," whether it's from their own real experiences or dreams that feel like actual memories. For instance, "She Takes Me High" is inspired by a recurring dream Travis Clark has of a girl. Every time he's with her he feels like "he's on cloud nine and every verse is about the dream -- the dream girl."
Over the course of We the Kings career, the band has had a lot of support from their family, friends and fans. They even wrote "We'll Be A Dream" to honor their dedicated fans. "Fans are the reason for sold out shows. They gave me the chance to be in a band and have made my dream come true."
As for the future, the band's excitement for their music and tour of live shows, has given them limitless inspiration. Yet, Clark is also realistic about writing, recording, blogging and playing. He's organized, hard working and knows what success means to him personally.
"Go for what your heart desires," he said. "I wasn't worried about fame, money and popularity -- I wanted fans -- I wanted to share lyrics with people." To hear songs from We the Kings, check out their tracks and music video below.
