How Does It Work?

Each state sets a date and holds its own primary elections, starting with New Hampshire in early January. The state sends delegates to the national party gathering in August to represent its voters. States with larger populations get more delegates and, therefore, a larger voice at the convention. There, the parties will each officially choose its final candidate to face off for President.
