Third Parties

Socialist

The Socialist Party advocates a classless, nonsexist, non-racist society. Staunchly anti-Communist, the Socialist Party was formed in 1900 by labor union leader Eugene V. Debs and was once a prominent national third party. Numerous Socialist congressmen, mayors and other elected officials were elevated to office over the first half of the 20th century. The party, now much diminished, currently focuses more on local elections, but has nominated candidates in recent presidential elections.
