A Big Bird in North America
California condors are the largest birds on the continent, with a wingspan of nine feet. A carrion bird, the California condor population decreased drastically in the 1900's after decades of shooting and poisoning.
By 1982, there were only 23 left. The bird's range once spanned the western portion of North America -- from western Canada to northern Mexico, to other coastline areas.
