This Hubble image, resembling Vincent Van Gogh's famous painting, is of an expanding halo of light around a star 20,000 light-years away, at the edge of the Milky Way galaxy. Called V838 Moncerotis, the red supergiant star gave off a flashing pulse of light two years ago.
