Many French cheeses are protected by a Designation of Origin under European Union law. Traditionally, there were 350-400 cheeses made in France, now there are over a thousand. Many cheeses like Camembert, Asiago and Roquefort (pictured) can only be named such, if they are made in that specific region of the country.
