Over the years strong female athletes have helped bring women to the forefront of the sports world. Title IX was created to legitimize women's roles in sports, particularly in high school and collegiate athletics after its inception in 1972.

Title IX, which is also called the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act, states:

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..." --United States Code Section 20,

Though the law was established to limit sexism in athletic departments and on sports teams across the country, the law is controversial. Some believe that Title IX has led to larger numbers of women athletes, especially on the college level, whereas others feel that the law reduces the amount of programs available to men.

No matter the case, below is a collection of exceptional women who play with incredible skill. Check out these amazing athletes who prove, "You play like a girl," is a compliment.
