Your Turn: Obama's Education Speech

Updated: September 08, 2009

President Obama reached out to students giving them a pep talk about the importance of education. Despite much controversy and a small protest outside of Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia, the president spoke with the students and millions of others on televisions in classrooms.

"Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer," said the president. "And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is."

According to the Associated Press, President Obama is not the first Commander in Chief to address students in school. Many presidents visit schools, but some parents and conservative organizations feared Obama would push his own political agenda.

During his speech and while speaking with students afterward, President Obama recounted his experiences as a student and encouraged the importance of education.
