Around the world, 130 million kids don't attend school, and 70% of those are girls. Last spring, Shelby Holliday told you about She's the First, an organization dedicated to helping girls living in the developing world go to school.
So, what does that have to do with the colorful cupcake in the picture? The way to help girls go to and finish school -- often making them the first one in their family to achieve that goal -- is by sponsoring their tuition. How does that happen? This is where the cupcake comes in.
Tammy Tibbets, who founded She's the First, is asking thousands of students (yes, thousands!) to host a tie-dye cupcake bake sale between November 1st and 8th to support the cause. To get involved, find a couple of friends who like to bake (or sell! or work the technology angle!) and then pop over to the website to register your team.
You'll get a tool kit for your sale with the recipe for the cupcakes and great ideas for promoting it, not to mention the warm fuzzy feeling that comes from knowing you're helping to make the world a better place -- quite literally. According to The Girl Effect, "An extra year of primary school boosts girls’ eventual wages by 10 to 20 percent. An extra year of secondary school: 15 to 25 percent.."
