Shelby: In North Carolina, flags of remembrance have been arranged in the shape of the Twin Towers.
In Tennessee, firefighters from across the country gathered for the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb.
And in New York City, people lined up to visit the National September 11th Memorial.
Since it opened last year, more than four-and-a-half million visitors have come to the site where the World Trade Center Towers once stood.
“They step on this very ground, where all that tragedy took place, and they see it transformed into a place of beauty and inspiration.”
Near the memorial, new buildings are a symbol of new beginnings.
September 11th has also turned into a day of good deeds. The idea is for people to remember in a positive way, and organizations like 9-11 Day and New York Says Thank You are encouraging people everywhere to unite through positive action.
“I will volunteer at my church.”
“I will help somebody build a house.”
“I will find a way to help someone become more literate.”
Even celebrities are getting involved. And the goal is to turn that day of terror into a generation of kindness.
