Ramona and Beezus

By Emily Cook

For Ramona Quimby (Joey King), reality is a fantasy world. For her older sister Beatrice, who Ramona calls “Beezus” (Selena Gomez), reality is coping with her annoying little sister. Ramona and Beezus (G) is the hilarious and heart-felt film adaptation of Beverly Cleary’s popular book series. The film, which is loosely based on Cleary’s “Ramona the Brave,” follows the misadventures of eight-year-old Ramona growing up in a suburb of Portland, Oregon.

“I hope you’re enjoying third grade, you may be here for a while,” says Ramona’s teacher Mrs. Meacham (Sandra Oh), after she rescues her from a debacle on the monkey bars. Despite her creativity and intelligence, Ramona refuses to follow the rules, often resulting in trouble for her, and humiliation for uptight tween Beezus.

Whether it’s watching Ramona’s hilarious mishaps at a modeling audition, or her hair trauma on class picture day involving a raw egg, her adventures will be sure to leave you with a sense inspiration and bravery.

While full of cheerful moments, it also doesn’t shy away from some serious issues that the Quimby family faces. From the death of the family cat, to Mr. Quimby (John Corbett) losing his job, Ramona and Beezus paints a realistic picture of what it’s like being a kid in today‚Äôs world.
