The Book Thief
The Book Thief
By Markus Zusak

Silver-tongued, yet tentative, Death relates the tale of 9-year-old Liesel, who learns to read after she pockets a copy of a gravedigger's handbook at her young brother's funeral. Intrigued by the girl, Death observes as Leisel realizes she can't stop picking up books wherever she encounters them, and she soon shares what she learns with her adopted brother Rudy (who has his own obsession with American runner Jesse Owens) and Max, a young Jewish boy the family has hidden in their basement.

The story of Liesel's discovery of the power of words and language as her community crumbles in the wake of Nazi's hold on Germany is powerful, haunting and unforgettable.

This Holocaust story began as an adult novel in Australia and is meant for mature teens and young adults.
