The White Darkness
The White Darkness
By Geraldine McCaughrean

Quiet, hearing impaired fourteen-year-old Symone is so consumed with the 1901 Scott Expedition to Antarctica, that her imaginary relationship with Captain Lawrence "Titus" Oates is the most important one in her life.

When her Uncle Victor surprises her with a trip to the South Pole, she is elated. Her uncle's motives soon come into question when Symone discovers that he has an obsession of his own -- Symmes's Hole, rumored to be a portal to the core of the earth.

Her story becomes a tale of desperate survival as her uncle's quest soon becomes out of control. Symone tells her story with a wry British humor that's easy to appreciate and an appendix that explains the Scott Expedition is invaluable.
