Rules for Recess?

bigstock-Education--Pupils-at-schoolya-36420298

Students going outside for recess at Weber Middle School in Port Washington, New York are dealing with a few changes this school year.

Because of safety concerns, some activities and equipment have been banned – including footballs, soccer balls, baseball, lacrosse balls – even Nerf balls. Games of tag and cartwheels are also outlawed. The change, according to the school, is an effort to curb playground injuries, particularly concussions.

But some of the students say the ban just isn’t fair and students should be allowed to play, and be physical, in pretty much any way they’d like when they have a break from classes.

Vote in the poll and tell us what you think, then leave a comment explaining why.

That is WAY to strict. Recess is the time kids get to play. All they do most of the day is sit behind desk and learn. I think it is a Bad idea to do that.

i think that it is necessary for kids not to play football, soccer or baseball because parents are wasting their money on their kids to go to the emergency room just for playing unprotected sports.

It’s WAY to strict kids want and need fun it helps exersize the body and recess is a time for fun and recreation and you can also talk to your friends you can’t do that in school!

Schools should be advocating physical education not taking them away, especially for the younger generation. All kids want to do is play . . . Yes, too much of clowning around can really get someone hurt, but should the solution be to take away healthy activities in which keep kids’ hearts pumping and blood flowing.

I am really against taking those games out of the New York school. I think that since we are kids, we should be able to play outside without teachers on our backs about what we play. I understand where the teachers are coming from, and I thank them for caring, but that is way to strict in my opinion.

I used to love recess but since “too old” for it I really miss it. So I like the kids should just be kids. Let them get a hurt just a little it is not a big deal. It was made to relax play around on the swings and let the boys tickle themselves it’s fun. At my school we played red rover all the time but my last year at elementry school they banned it because ONE kid got it wasn’t like two hundred kids got hurt.

right?! That’s true. Kids will be kids. Kids have energy that needs to be used up. If all these fun games that help burn off energy is taken away, then how do teachers expect, students to focus in class?

I think they are kind of limiting the students to things they won’t get hurt on but honestly you can get hurt doing mostly anything.Example, cutting you could cut your finger,Paper you could get a paper cut.So I think the school is being too strict about this and sports should be allowed.I mean what’s a recess with out sports and tag?A recess that all you do is talk. That you can do in group work or something similar. The school really shouldn’t take away sports and tag like that I think they should try to get the students to try not getting hurt or pushing and shoving each other.

It isn’t right that these kids can’t enjoy the games they like at recess. Cartwheels by girls are allowed but must be supervised? Isn’t the recess supervised anyway? Why take away the footballs, soccer balls, and baseballs? I’m sure these kids play these sports outside of school.

Recess is a time to go outside and release all of your energy, so you don’t need to in school. Sitting down in a chair for 6 1/2 hours a day is just too much without a break. Banning football, and soccer? We are kids. We need sports.

I think that it is really dumb to take away all the fun things we get to do at recess because we work hard all day we deserve some fun I think. If you made every kid wear tennis shoes during recess you would not have as many injuries that and make football flag or 2 hand tag. I mean you let us play school sports but take away them at recess I what are we supposed to do walk around and do nothing at recess?

I think that the rules are to strict because people are taking all of our fun away by giving us all these rules. I think that kids should know to wear the right shoes so they can know that they are at risk. I think that recess is the best time of the day, and I think that we should have the right to have some fun.

This is too strick you could play those sports and get hurt but everyday you take a risk of getting hurt. You could be walking to class and get hurt just as well as you could playing those game during recess. Taking away those sport on the play ground is too much. As a student I think this is to strick, students have sat all day and need to release that energy, in any way they would like. That’s just my opinion.

Also, decision making skills as well as teamwork skills will not be developed. Make up your minds… do you want us participating in physical activities or in front of screens?

I believe it is neccessary because they are just being concerned about the children being safe but I also say they are being to strict because we already have teachers that are on duty to watch the kids so why take our equipment away. If they take these things away what are the children suppose to do during recess. The ban isn’t fair and students should be allowed to play, and be physical, in any way they’d like when they have a break from classes.

Recess is suppost to be a free time to get away from classes, because some teachers don’t have anything to do in some periods if some students have blocked scheduling or if they have an exploratory. Recess is suppost to be fun, and if they take that away, then there really wont be any recess, and taking stuff away from students and making them do something else, then it will create drama.

Kids need to be taught how to play safely. They need the freedom to play the sports and other normal kid games. Kids’ creativity needs to be encouraged so they can come up with games that will give them exercise. We have an epidemic of overweight kids that is causing more harm to their hearts which will cause death verses a few scrapes and bruises which will go away. The research supports that kids need physical activity. They are developing heart disease, diabetes, and other serious health problems that follow them into adult life and shorten the quality and length of their lives.

I think not letting kids play football, soccer, and other sports during recess is ridiculous! All day long kids sit in classes so when recess time comes they are ready for it, but when they get out there they are told they can essentially just sit there. Having little to no exercise during the school day can make kids have worse behavior and worse schoolwork. So what if kids get a few scrapes and bruises they are kids, you have to let kids be kids!

Recess rules are too strict. Kids should be able to do cartwheels, and play football. Taking this away is taking away kids opportunity to put off the energy that would get them in trouble in the classroom. Accidents will happen no matter where you are.

I think it is necessary because most of the kids play too rough or too hard and one of the other kids end up getting hurt, but then again I do kind of think it is kind of strict considering the fact that they do have duty teachers or a grown up to watch you during those types of sports.

It is strict but in some ways this may help. I don’t think you should necessarily ban tag and football etc… You can just tell them to play two hand touch football and not to be rough in tag. Just supervise the kids and make sure they don’t do anything there not supposed to do.

I believe the recess rules are too strict. Yes, children can get hurt from these things, but it’s a natural everyday thing. You can’t take away people’s rights because of a fear of getting hurt. Students need a break from school activities, recess is that break. This just steps over the line–way, WAY too strict. Kids must be kids. Let them be! A few scraps and bruises are nothing. Even now, I play football with the guys, and soccer and basketball, and Ultimate Frisbee, all of which can get you injured. But we as children still learning how to play responsibly need to make mistakes, if we fall and scrape our knee on the pavement because we wanted to catch the football, we should just reevaluate our actions and just stay put on the grass. If there is no grass there, then play a sport that doesn’t require falling a lot. There are a lot of ways to have fun and be safe, without having so many restrictive rules.

When kids go out to recess they are ready to be active and not have to sit and not be able to do anything after learning for most of the day. I feel that if the school is going to take away the footballs, baseballs, soccer balls, and even lacrosse balls, they shouldn’t have recess at all. Recess is a time of day for children/students to be able to let out their energy in whatever way possible. It would be different if these kids were intentionally hurting others for fun, but playing football, baseball, and soccer, and even just doing cartwheels is a way to let children let out energy so when they go back into class, they aren’t super hyper, and they’re ready to learn. Recess is so that we can take a breather and hang out with our friends and when they don’t let out that energy teachers will end up with kids full of energy. As an outcome kids are talking, moving around,or simply are inpatient in the class room and don’t pay attention witch cause others to get distracted and off task. Those are the most sports played during recess so why take it away. I understand that adults are trying to combat injuries during recess, but these rules are taking it way too far. During recess, kids expect to be able to go out and have fun. If you put rules on how they do that, they’re going to end up disliking school more than they might already or try finding ways around the rules. It’s simply what happens. When restrictions are set on what they can do, they’ll find something else to do and, because they are kids, they’ll find some way to hurt themselves. It’s what happens. If you take away what causes the injury, how are they going to learn? They’ll take longer to figure out that, hey, this hurts, and maybe I shouldn’t do it!

I’m not too sporty. I like to chill and listen to my music while I talk to friends instead of doing cartwheels and playing tag. Getting hurt, in certain terms, is part of growing up. I’m mean, what kid has never gotten a razor blade and tried to shave their hairless leg? I bet that school administrators have also grown up with these game, if not, more risky ones. I think that adults nowadays are way overprotective with safety. The superintendent has issued these bans without looking at any studies show by health experts. Adults worry about what they don’t know. I’m just saying, though. I’m not saying that these games aren’t a little dangerous, they are, but don’t stop them completely. If safety is a must, then make it a rule that if these games are played on school grounds, then protective gear must be worn. Any student without a protective gear can not play.

The whole point of recess is so kids can have fun and stay active. It makes no sense to even have recess if you don’t do anything. I’m in 9th grade and don’t have recess anymore, but when I did many people got hurt on slides and one girl in 5th grade broke her arm falling off of a big blue and red spider web-like hexagon thing, but I’ve never seen anyone get hurt with any of the things they banned. In second grade I fell backward off a swing and landed on my head. I could’ve broke my neck at 7 years old and they decided to take away NERF BALLS of all things! I’m 14 and STILL play tag. You can have some limits if there’s ice all over the ground or something to prevent slipping, but this is WAY too strict, and only limits fun rather than safety.

Bumps and scrapes are a part of life, and though I understand banning tackle football, banning touch football, soccer, baseball, cartwheels, and even tag is a little insane. I remember that when I was in Elementary school tag was a huge thing. And anyone with common sense knows not to kick a ball at someone’s head or cartwheel in a crowded area. Plus, these days even younger kids play baseball and soccer outside school, so what’s the point of the ban? I remember hurting myself twice on the playground because I slipped, and the only time I remember someone getting a broken arm was because he ran into a wall at too high a speed to stop in time. So what’s next? Banning jump-ropes because they’re a choking hazard? By the time we have kids, they won’t even be allowed to leave the classroom. And that’s just ridiculous.
