Jamaican singer Samantha J. took a chance on a talent search and ended up with a record deal. For the seventeen year old, it was just natural. ”Ever since I could talk I loved music,” she shared during a Skype interview, which she manged to squeeze in between classes at her high school.
“I went to Kingston and sang Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ — which is an amazing song.” Now, she’s working on her own amazing songs. “Recording, for me, is like going into my zone. We had a full studio, with a producer. It was really fun.”
Also fun? Having a single at number one on the charts at home and a video to go with it. Which meant that at her live show, “The whole audience knew the lyrics. They were all singing along. One minute, I was a girl going to school, and the next, it had blown up. My name was everywhere. It was mind-blowing.”
Set to graduate in June, she explained that balancing school and her career requires “time management. I have to be a hard worker.” But she doesn’t think that should stop anyone from giving an entertainment career a shot. “Go for it! If you see an opportunity, take it. Because even if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t hurt to try.”
