The Icarus Youth

“This is exactly the kind of music we want to be making” explained The Icarus Youth’s frontman Will Whiting in a phone interview. The band, which came together not too long ago in Brighton, on the southern coast of England also includes Paul Mason (bass), Jay Bone (drums), and Jam Lindsay (lead guitar). All four contribute to that sound, though Whiting was the one who brought them all together.

“I had come back from traveling, and I had my heart set on finding the right people — real live musicians.” Though Whiting “was lucky enough to grow up in a family that valued music — in a guitar around the campfire sort of way” — and he had rapped and worked on more produced music, the vision for Icarus was different. Once he found the right people by going to shows and holding an audition, the four “got into a practice room and starting jamming, day and night.”

The songs here (which are exclusive versions from their 3-track EP) “The City,” “We Could Have it All” and “Falling” are the results of that work. The music, energetic and a little edgy with influences that include Michael Jackson and Jamiroquai, “has quirk” but also “a positive vibe that can lift people up.”

For now, they’re playing as many gigs as possible and planning for performances at festivals around the U.K., as well as keeping their eye on a possible tour around Europe, and then, eventually, the United States. “We have big plans,” shared Whiting. The ultimate goal is “being able to reach everyone — to bring our music to the world.”

“We want people to realize that whoever they are…they have something great inside them.”

"The City" Lyrics

so we cant give up no no,
in the city,
so we cant give up no no,
no no no no,

oh oh this life is calling,
so we cant give up no no,
let's learn them lessons,
it's, another day in the city,
land of the shirt and tie,
watching the hands of the clock till were dizzy,
and then were back to the bleeding grind,

once more to the breach friends,
curse of the nine to five,
giving them all we got, till our thoughts are lost,
then were back to the waiting line

sing it for the gringos sat up in the windows,
a hundred stories high,
trying to get made underpaid,
as life is passing by,

to all of the workers, looking for their purpose,
reaching for the light,
trying to get by with a broken vibe,
in a time where the minds are blind,

oh oh this life is calling,
so we cant give up no no,
let's learn them lessons,

and were so, deep in the metropolis,
loosing the lust for life,
climbing the walls of them offices,
soul to the firing line,

rise up to the boring incorporates,
pull out the stops and rise,
for what's important is all of us walking,
true to whatever inside,

sing it for the gringos sat up in the windows,
a hundred stories high
caught in a rut, broke as...

to all of the workers, looking for their purpose,
reaching for the light,
trying to get by with a broken vibe,
in a time where the minds are blind,

oh oh this life is calling,
so we cant give up no no,
let's learn them lessons,
in the city,

where the souls are calling,
and it's a pity,
oh that the fire is falling,
in the city

"Falling" Lyrics

too late too late too late,
now were falling,
there's writing on the walls again,
telling us to medicate,

and the kids at the bottom,
of the class class class,
be walkin' a broken path,
going nowhere,

so lets pack em in a ship,
and sail em away just sail em away,
just sail em away,
or we'll be livin' in a broken community, and that ain't ok,

till we learn,
we'll be falling,
till we learn,
we'll be falling, falling, falling, falling

too late too late too late,
now were falling,
there's writing not the barricades,
and the kids are on a rampage,

oh we been liven with a,
broken heart heart heart heart,
been liven with a broken soul,
and that ain't ok,

for these are days we fight for lies of old,
our wings are tied the fires are turning cold,
younger are fallen 'n' lawless,
brought up in the soul asylum,

where the satelights,
up in the skies,
are like the god,
that guides them

these are days the lies have left us cold,
our wings are tied the fires are turning cold,
the cries will find us all,

till we learn,
we'll be falling,
till we learn,
we'll be falling, falling, falling, falling

so tell me why we falling down,
are we falling,
so tell me why we falling down, down,
are we falling

"We Could Have It All" Lyrics

and these rags are gettin older,
flats are smaller,
and we keep trying to find our way,
as the lights are calling,

and these streets are getting colder,
the hearts are harder of hope,
seems like everything it leans,
but the world keeps turning,

so we lie in wait the days,
slowly eyes that fall and fade,
we're calling out for hope,
we keep calling,

and we could have it all,
the love the fame the glory,
find our ways again its all in how we,
own the pain we keep calling,
calling, calling

but there's spirit int he shackles,
just waiting to be free, free,
and if only we could shine a light,
so the rest of the world could see,

these days are getting longer oh,
the nights are harder to sleep,
and it's taken every thing we got,
just to keep this burning,

to keep this burning

so we lie in wait the days,
slowly eyes that fall and fade,
were calling out for hope,
we keep calling,

and we could have it all,
the love the fame the glory,
find our ways again its all in how we,
own the pain we keep calling,

calling, calling
