The Large Hadron Collider

The world’s largest particle collider, know as the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), has recently been repaired after initial tests damaged it last year.

Already, the scientists working on the collider have produced a record-breaking result — the atom smasher has broken the previous record for atom acceleration — beaming particles at a rate of 1.18 trillion electron volts. They hope to make more progress later this winter, which should lead to fresh insights about the nature of matter and the universe.
