A few weeks ago, I had the chance to sit down with First Lady Michelle Obama to talk about healthy eating. And yeah, she was just as awesome as you think she is. She gave us some great tips on how to eat better, and reminded us about how eating healthy can actually make you a better student and a better athlete.
And she got me thinking – maybe it’s time I step up my own lunch time game. So here are three of my favorite tasty and healthy lunches.
#1 THE CLASSIC
A PB & J: This oldie but goodie has always been one of my faves – and you can bring it into healthy lunch territory with just a few small changes. Opt for 100% whole wheat or whole grain bread. Make sure your peanut butter (or whatever nut butter you choose) is all natural with no added preservatives or sugar. And on the jelly side – same thing. Just try to stick to spreads that have no weird sounding ingredients and no added sugar. Here’s my fav combo: 100% whole grain cinnamon Raisin English Muffins, Organic Almond butter and (curve ball…) raw honey. I promise — it’s amazing!!
#2 CHIPS AND DIPS
Think of it as a deconstructed sandwich. Start with some minimally processed multigrain tortilla chips or 100% whole grain pita and then get dipping! Choose some dips for flavor – like salsa. And some dips that will fill ya up – like hummus, black bean dip and guacamole. Make sure to add in some veggie sticks like carrots and celery for extra dipping and crunch. Pretty soon, you’ll be dipping your way to a tasty and filling lunch!
#3 THERMOS IT UP
It’s a winter alternative to the brown paper bag. When the months get cold, a hot soup can totally hit the spot for lunch. Make sure to pick a soup that had enough bulk to fill you up – think soups filled with veggies, beans, meat or tofu. Some of my faves: Three bean chili, lentil soup, and hearty white bean soup.
And or course – add in as many veggies and fruits as you want! Carrot sticks always add a great crunch. And, I love to finish off every single meal with an apple – its nature’s toothbrush and helps make your breath a little fresher before you head to your next class.

I can’t live without chocolate!!!!!!
they are so cute
i like it because I love me some good vegetables and fruits. I think the reason why people don’t like vegetables is because they just eat fast food all the time or somebody fixed them bad vegetables.
Healthy Lunches can be good. It depends on your taste. I agree with Mrs. Obama that we need to eat healthier. If something doesn’t look appealing to me I think of the long run. I hope to live a long life. And honestly after force eating them for 13 years I’ve actually begun to like fruits and veggies. I eat cold lunch because Mrs. Michelle Obama’s plan hasn’t acted upon my school fully. We still have greasy pizza and unhealthy main dishes. But I’m waiting.
I still enjoy eating candy. My favorite is Hersheys Milk Chocolate.
This new school lunch thing isn’t helping kids with obesity. They still eat the same foods they did before this. It’s making skinny people even more skinny due to the salads!
Definitely not the next big thing! This healthy school stuff is just going downhill. I mean, that stuff is disgusting! I don’t think it’s healthier at all.
I think it is great that we have a healthy lunch because if we din’t have a healthy lunch it would be the same thing over and over and to the people who have PE after launch it would be great because u don’t get sick
it’s the next big thing!
I hope yall know that in sc we are starving and if you look in our garbage cans its full of fruit they feed us all year. We will try something new because we eat left overs evreyday. I am tired of change and one change I want to see is no more hairs in my food. 40% of people who eat all of thire food. And then when we got new terrible milk it was expired I hate these changes
Tell them!
Go tell them jed
find out what mr obama has done to babys
Next Big Thing ipads for everyone at every school
maggi and tom u guys r amazing at working on channel one news
It’s nice to try to get kids to eat healthy. But, if they don’t like the foods then they won’t eat them. Then we’re not eating at all and so we’re starving by seventh period!
Ya i know it is like the next big thing Mrs.Obama is right
I have seen some changes in my school lunch but actually it’s the same they have been serving the food that actually tastes ok but sometimes they do give the nasty food. Even though I usually take my lunch I sometimes eat there when we forget to go grocery shopping or some. And I think it’s cool that,at my school, the lunch is free but I don’t like the idea of pay plan or something like that I don’t remember what it’s called, but it’s a thing where you put money online in your account and that’s the only way you can buy chips or anything like that. But I wish they did let us choose what to put in our salads like in the video. They just give us these plates with salad and most of the lettuce is purple and I don’t like that lettuce. Also I don’t get the idea of milk for lunch I mean I get some kids don’t drink milk but why for lunch? Why not orange juice? Or lemonade if they want to be cheap. But other than that it’s cool and I hope those changes are made! Unless the changes that have happened are those……
I think the healthy food is ok because we could get Sigurd up and we will get in trouble.
This food solution thing is freakin stupid I think its a fib stop this crisis
yes eat away
this is the next big thing
this is sooooo true
yes lets eat away
really!!!!!!!
you saw the titanic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michelle Obama’s interview on today’s show was complete and utter lies. The school lunch at my school has by no means gotten any better, or any healthier. In fact, it’s gotten at least twice as worse. My school lunch, on top of not being healthy, has been reduced to disgusting tasting and disgusting LOOKING food. Before she takes position on an interview, regardless of who she is, she should get her facts in order first and find out if her supposed “changes” have actually taken place the way she says they have. The schools shown on today’s show actually had food that looked like food. I only wish I could have that option at my school.
