Common Core and Channel One: Reading Informational Text

Schools around the country are adopting the new national standards for instruction, known as the Common Core. Over forty states have chosen to implement curriculum and assessments that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Across the country teachers are working to make sure their students are meeting the expectations outlined for the grade level and subject area they are teaching. There are a specific set of reading standards that describe what teens should be able to do when reading informational text.

How does Channel One News help you teach to the Common Core State Standards for reading informational text?

In the News section of, you’ll find articles that are perfect for teaching reading skills related to informational texts. With these articles teachers can guide teens through a lesson that asks them to “determine central ideas or themes” and “summarize the key supporting details” (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.2). These skills are both outlined in the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards and can be easily addressed using the great articles Channel One has to offer on current events.

Another Anchor Standard that connects to the informational text presented on relates to language. Students are asked to “interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text” and “analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone” (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.4). The articles available in the News section of our site can be a fantastic source for finding examples of how words are used effectively in an informational text. Teachers can use these pieces of writing to help teens work on English Language Arts skills while keeping them informed about current events.

One big focus of the Common Core when it comes to reading is holding students accountable for going back to the text to locate an answer to a question. Teens are being asked to “read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it” and “to support conclusions drawn from the text” (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1).  If your students are answering questions about an article they have read there is an expectation that they will go back to the text to prove the answer. Teachers can use the current events articles on to help students practice this important reading skill.

The Common Core State Standards expects that students can “read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently” (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.10). contains articles that explain real world events and issues to teens to help them make meaning of the world around them.
