Five + Books for Every Summer Sitch

Growing up, the first week of every summer vacation also meant our annual family trip to the book store. My brother and I would scour the isles, picking out every book on our summer reading list… and inevitably throwing in a few extra (mine – all about talking animals and cooking. His – all SciFi trilogies). It was easily one of my top days of the year…and getting my summer reading list prepared every year is STILL one of my top favorite things in life.

So – here’s a rundown on 5 (and more) of my fave books to read this summer.

What to read while stuck on the airplane/train/car/boat/trapped in the family RV

Two of my favorite memoirs are Bossy Pants by Tina Fey, and Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling. Both books follow the triumphs and challenges that each women faced in her life and career…and true to character they are both also absolutely LOL funny!! These are easy reads and the perfect books to crush while stuck in-between your siblings on a long road trip.

What to read while laying on the beach

Where’d You Go, Bernadette? by Maria Semple was one of my absolute FAVE books from this year. It stars a young girl trying to solve the mystery of her mother’s disappearance…but it is so much more!! So sit back in your beach chair, dig your toes in the sand, and get lost in the magical and mysterious world of Bernadette Fox and her daughter Bee.

What to read when when it’s a raining nonstop and you’re stuck inside for the day/weekend/week

The Divergent Series! I know, I know, Maggie, you’re late to the game. But I just binged this series last week and now I see what all the hype is about! So embrace the summer storm, hunker in and become BFFs with Tris…the next movie will be out in no time!

What to read if you wanna stay up late, snuggle under your covers and have a good, ugly cry

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green If you haven’t heard about it by now, here’s the run down: two terminally ill teenagers meet and fall in love. It’s a simple, beautiful book that will make you smile, laugh, cry, sob and fall in love over and over again. The movie version premiered in theaters this summer…so you can now go read it, cry. Then go see the movie…and cry again.

What to read because you probably have to for school anyways but you really should read it because it’s a classic and it just really is that good

Ahhh so many in this category…Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey (ok full disclosure: I haven’t 100% read 100% of these… but they’re on my list too!)

I want some suggestions too please — what should I read this summer?! Send them my way in the comments.
