Genny Jackson: The issues of climate change and equal pay for women

I think that Donald Trump has not addressed climate change, and in fact seems to dismiss climate change as a real problem for my generation. I don’t know if it’s because he is so old that he simply doesn’t care about my generation, or that he seems to be following the Republican Party line which denies that climate change even exists. It could also be that he believes that if climate change does exist that is is NOT man-made and therefore cannot be “fixed” by man. All I know is that climate change is a clear and present danger to my generation, and to the children of my generation. I will be afraid to bring children into the world, knowing that their lives might be adversely affected by global warming.

Although Hillary Clinton is a woman, I don’t think either candidate is focused enough on women’s issues. For example, the fact that women earn approximately 70 cents on the dollar for the same work as men is a real injustice. IF the work is the same, why should I earn less than my male counterpart. It’s not right, and it’s not fair. When I enter the workforce, I want to know that my work is valued the same as the man doing the same job next to me. I will need to make a living and provide for my family in the same way a man does, so I should definitely get equal pay for equal work.

Trump has made so many misogynistic comments about women that his recent nod toward women’s issues–subsidizing child care for families making less than $500,000 a year–seems like a token gesture to women. I simply don’t believe that Trump champions women’s causes, even though he appears to be very supportive of his daughter, Ivanka Trump. Ivanka Trump is an impressive young woman, but I believe Donald Trump parades her in front of the media too often in order to give validity to his statements that he is a champion of women’s issues.

I don’t know why Hillary doesn’t seem to care about equal pay for equal work, but maybe it’s because she makes so much money for every paid speech that she gives,┬áthat it doesn’t matter much. I think that Hillary doesn’t understand the struggles of working women regardless of the fact that she is a woman.

Another issue that I don’t think Donald Trump is addressing much is equal rights. His campaign has been fraught with racist and misogynistic comments all along. I don’t believe that he will be a champion of equal rights if he makes it all the way to the White House. On the other hand, I do believe that Hillary Clinton has long been a champion of equal rights for all Americans. I think Hillary understands that we are a nation of immigrants, and that we must treat every American with respect, and all rights must be protected for every American.
