Mindfulness and Meditation: What Is It?

By Channel One News 10.10.2016 blog

For many kids, the idea of meditating is pretty boring. Especially in today’s world, where we’re constantly being stimulated by our phones, televisions and computers, it can be hard to quiet your brain. That’s a big part of why mindfulness, a form of meditation that emphasizes focusing on the present, has become so popular.

What Is Mindfulness?

Glad you asked! Mindfulness is generally defined as the practice of focusing your mind on the present, and accepting what is without judgment. It’s about connecting with the world around you in a healthy, thoughtful way.

Sounds Kind of Weird …

At first glance, yeah, mindfulness does sound kind of far-out. But it’s being used by huge tech companies, psychotherapists, and even schools as a way to inspire people, foster better relationships and treat certain mental health issues.

What Do I Get Out of It?

Several studies and records of personal experiences suggest that mindfulness can help with concentration, stress and overall happiness. Since it’s about focusing on and accepting the present, you may find yourself more inspired by what goes on around you, and more aware of your feelings and actions.

So How Do I Get Started?

There are lots of resources and different methods you can consider, but here are a few easy steps to help get you started.

  1. Sit or lay down in a quiet, comfortable space.
  2. Close your eyes and begin to focus on your breathing. Allow your thoughts to go where they like, without judgment.
  3. Pay attention to what’s going on around you, like smells and sounds. Don’t let them distract you!
  4. If your mind starts to wander into planning your next school project, or that embarrassing thing you said last week, redirect it to what’s currently happening.

Practice makes perfect, and eventually, you may find it quite enjoyable.

Mindfulness is a form of social and emotional learning that can be described as a particular way of paying attention in order to bring awareness to one’s experience. Generally considered to be based on age-old practices, when you are at the youngest age 9-12 you get bullied and trust me i was to but i use this and i helped me with my grades and now my grades are improving.

I don’t know about Mindfulness sometimes. I recently was seriously disturbed by a horror video game. I haven’t done mindfulness yet, but I’m wondering if I’ll be even more disturbed by that game if I let my mind wander towards it.
